Ecommerce Migration

Shopify Migration Services Move to Shopify without
losing what you have built

I am Tony Cooper, based in Telford, and I move UK ecommerce stores onto Shopify — the products, the customers, the order history, and the search rankings that took years to earn. Your shop keeps trading while the new one is built. One fixed price, quoted after I have looked at your actual store.

Replatforming Is a Data and Redirect Job, Not a Design Job

The new theme is the visible part and the easy part. What decides whether a migration goes well is everything nobody sees.

Most migrations that go wrong do not go wrong on the build. They go wrong because the customer accounts did not come across, or the order history was left behind on a platform nobody is paying for any more, or the URLs that used to rank now answer with a 404. None of that is visible on launch day. It shows up three weeks later, in the traffic.

So the order of work runs backwards from the way it is usually sold. I record the baseline first — what ranks, what earns, what the shop is actually integrated with — and the redirect map is treated as the deliverable rather than an afterthought. The theme comes together while your existing shop carries on taking orders.

There is one honest exception worth naming before you pay anyone. If your catalogue is small, your shop is new, and nothing is ranking yet, then there is very little for a migration to protect and you may well be better off doing it yourself. I would rather tell you that at the quote stage than take the work.

Already on Shopify and Moving Stores?

Shopify to Shopify is a job I get asked about more than I expected, and it is not a copy and paste. It comes up when two shops are being consolidated into one, when a business changes hands and needs the store under its own account, or when a shop that was built on a development store has to become the live one.

The data moves the same way it moves from anywhere else — products, customers, order history, extracted and verified against the source. What changes is the redirect work, and that depends entirely on whether the domain travels with the store or the URLs are changing underneath it. If the domain moves and the URL structure holds, there may be almost nothing to redirect. If either changes, the map matters as much as it does on any other migration.

The Sequence

The same six steps whatever platform you are leaving. The first one is the one most migrations skip.

1

Baseline and Audit

Before anything moves I record where you stand: rankings, traffic, the URLs that earn, and every integration the shop depends on. That baseline is what we measure the migration against afterwards.

2

Build Alongside the Live Shop

Your new Shopify store is built while the old one keeps trading. Theme, payments, shipping rules and apps are configured and tested on a store nobody can see yet.

3

Move the Data

Products, variants, images, collections, customers and order history are extracted, converted and loaded, then checked against the source rather than eyeballed.

4

Map Every Redirect

Each old URL gets a 301 to its equivalent on Shopify. This is the step that decides whether your search visibility survives, so it is done as a mapped list, not a rule with exceptions.

5

Cut Over

DNS switches once the store has been signed off. It takes minutes, and the old shop stays reachable until the new one is answering.

6

Watch the Recrawl

Expect a few weeks of turbulence while Google recrawls. I watch the redirect map, the index and the rankings against the baseline, and fix what moves.

Build time: two weeks once I have full access. Elapsed time depends on how quickly access and sign-offs arrive.
