Shopify Plus Do You Actually Need
Shopify Plus?

Most pages about Shopify Plus are written to sell you Shopify Plus. This one is written to help you work out whether you need it — including the cases where the honest answer is no, and you should keep your money.

What Shopify Plus Actually Is

A plan, not a different platform — which is the single most useful thing to understand before you start comparing.

Shopify Plus is Shopify's enterprise tier. It runs the same core platform as every other Shopify store — the same admin, the same themes, the same app ecosystem — with higher limits and a set of capabilities aimed at bigger merchants.

That matters because of what it means for the decision. Upgrading is not a replatform. You are not rebuilding, you are not migrating data, and you are not learning new software. If you are already on Shopify, moving to Plus is a change of plan and a change of what you are permitted to do. The work sits in using the new capability well, not in surviving the move.

It is a different conversation entirely if you are coming to Plus from Magento, WooCommerce or BigCommerce. That is a real migration with real risk, and the plan you land on is the smaller half of the problem.

Standard Shopify vs Shopify Plus

The differences that genuinely change what you can do. Everything else is noise.

Capability Standard Shopify Shopify Plus
Checkout Locked — limited to Shopify's own settings Customisable, including bespoke logic at checkout
B2B and wholesale Apps and customer tags — workable, but you are working around the platform Native: company accounts, price lists, payment terms
Multiple storefronts Separate stores, managed separately Additional storefronts under one organisation
API rate limits Fine until an ERP or WMS starts talking to it constantly Substantially higher — this is why integrations drive upgrades
Automation Apps Shopify Flow included
Staff accounts Capped by plan Unlimited

Read that list as a diagnostic rather than a feature comparison. If one of those rows describes something you are currently fighting, you have a reason to upgrade. If none of them do, you have a reason to wait.

What Shopify Plus Costs

The published number, the thing the published number hides, and what to compare it against.

Shopify publishes Plus from around $2,300 a month on an annual commitment — roughly £1,800–1,900 depending on where the exchange rate sits. Above a certain sales volume the pricing moves to a variable model based on your revenue rather than a flat fee.

Two things people miss. The first is that it is priced in dollars, so your monthly cost moves with the rate and your finance director will notice. The second is that the comparison is rarely plan-versus-plan. By the time a merchant is seriously considering Plus, they are usually paying for a stack of apps that exist to work around the limits Plus removes — a B2B app, a workflow tool, a checkout extension. Add those to your current plan before you compare, and the gap narrows.

It still has to clear the bar. What I would want to see before recommending it is a specific capability you cannot currently deliver, with a number attached to what not delivering it costs you.

When It's Worth It — and When It Isn't

The part most pages leave out, because most pages are trying to sell you the upgrade.

Worth it when

  • You need to change the checkout and the platform won't let you
  • Wholesale or B2B is a real channel, run through workarounds
  • You're managing several storefronts as if they were separate businesses
  • An ERP, WMS or stock system is hitting API limits
  • Manual processes are consuming staff time that Flow would give back

Not worth it when

Your revenue crossed a number. Turnover is not a capability problem. Plus does not make a store convert better by being more expensive.

You want it to fix growth. If traffic or conversion is the constraint, the plan is not the lever — and you will still have the same problem with a bigger bill.

Someone told you it was the natural next step. It is a plan, not a rite of passage. Plenty of substantial businesses run standard Shopify well.

The real problem is elsewhere. Often what is actually broken is stock control, fulfilment or the systems behind the store — and upgrading the storefront changes none of it.

How I Can Help

Honest scope, stated plainly.

I work with UK merchants on Shopify — building stores, migrating them from other platforms, and improving what happens after launch. I am a Shopify Partner, and I have moved stores onto Shopify from Magento, WooCommerce, Wix and EKM.

On Plus specifically, the most useful thing I do is the part before anyone spends money: working out whether the upgrade solves the problem you actually have. That is a conversation, not an engagement, and it costs you nothing.

If the answer is yes, the work is the migration or the build, planned properly — URL map, redirects, data, and the integrations that usually arrive at the same time, because the businesses that need Plus tend to be the businesses whose stock control and back office are creaking too. If the answer is no, I will tell you that, and what I would do instead.

If you would rather start with what your current store is doing badly, the visibility side is usually where the cheaper wins are.
