Shopify Website Designer UK The Shopify Designer You Talk To
Is the One Who Builds
Most "Shopify designer" searches land on an agency, a directory, or a freelancer marketplace. This is none of those. I'm one designer with 27 years of ecommerce behind me, and every store I take on, I design, build and answer for myself.
What You're Actually Hiring
The theme is an afternoon. The store is everything underneath it.
Anyone can put "Shopify designer" on a profile, and the person charging two hundred pounds to recolour a free theme uses the same three words as the person who can move an entire trading store between platforms without losing a ranking. I've written a full guide to telling the builders from the theme-flippers — the short version is that the visible part of the job is the smallest part.
When you hire me, the design work covers the parts that decide whether the store sells: the catalogue and variant structure that lets customers and Google find your products, the checkout and shipping rules that match how you actually trade, the product feed your ads will run from, and — if you are coming from another platform — the migration that brings your rankings with you. The theme sits on top of all of it, and it is the easy bit.
- Store design and build — a custom Shopify theme, not a recoloured template
- Catalogue architecture: products, variants and collections structured properly
- Checkout, payments and shipping configured to how you actually sell
- Migration from Magento, WooCommerce, Wix or EKM with rankings protected
- SEO foundations built in from the first page, not bolted on after
The Work, Not the Portfolio
Mock-ups prove a designer can decorate. Trading stores prove the rest of it works.
The build I'm proudest of arrived as an emergency: an EKM store whose checkout was failing, twenty-four thousand customers, and a product export no standard tool could read. I migrated the whole business to Shopify — customers, orders and rankings intact — because no clean path existed and one had to be built.
Another arrived with three thousand "products" that were really about a hundred — every size and colour split into its own thin, dead page. Restructuring that catalogue is what Shopify design actually looks like: nothing you could photograph, everything the store's sales depended on.
I work through the Shopify Admin API and the command line rather than clicking through the dashboard one product at a time — which is why a restructure that would take an agency a fortnight of billable admin is a script, and why a build comes together quickly without corners being cut.
What It Costs
Stated plainly, because 'call for a quote' is a game I don't play.
A complete Shopify store — design, build, up to 100 products, payment gateway and shipping configured — starts at £2,490. Bigger catalogues and custom functionality price by what is actually involved, and the full packages are on the Shopify website design page. Moving an existing store is a migration rather than a build, and that starts at £2,490.
What the price never includes is a surprise. You will know what you are getting and what it costs before any work starts, and if what you need is smaller than what I sell — a theme tweak, a one-off fix — I will say so and point you somewhere sensible.
The Three Questions I'd Ask Any Shopify Designer
From my own guide to choosing one — answered for myself, since you're here.
"Can you show me a store you've built that's actually trading?"
Yes — stores taking real orders, not portfolio mock-ups. I'll happily walk you through live work on a call rather than send a gallery of screenshots, because a trading store is the only evidence that the parts you can't see in a screenshot actually work.
"How do you handle my existing Google rankings in a migration?"
A complete URL map before anything moves, a 301 redirect for every page that carries value, and metadata preserved — the same discipline on every migration I take on. Your rankings took years to earn; the move is planned around keeping them.
"When something breaks at checkout, who fixes it, and how fast?"
I do, and quickly — because there is nobody else it could be. No ticket queue, no account manager relaying messages to a developer you've never met. The person who built the checkout is the person on the phone.
