Why Invest in a New Website
The Honest Answer, Not the Sales Pitch
Not because I want to sell you one. Because after 26 years, I know what happens to businesses that put it off — and I know when putting it off is actually the right call.
Your Website Is Working Against You
Most business owners don't realise the damage until they see the numbers. A website is never neutral — it's either helping or hurting.
When it works, it's your best salesperson
A good website works 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It doesn't take holidays, doesn't call in sick, and handles multiple prospects at the same time. It answers the questions people actually have, builds trust before you've even spoken to them, and sends you enquiries while you sleep. I've watched businesses double their enquiry rate after a rebuild — not from marketing tricks, but from a site that finally does the job properly.
When it doesn't, it's actively damaging trust
A slow, outdated website doesn't just fail to convert — it sends a message. Visitors decide whether to trust a business within a second of landing on the page. If your site looks like it was built in 2015, loads slowly on a phone, or doesn't show up on Google at all, prospects aren't thinking "their website needs updating." They're thinking "this business isn't serious" — and they're clicking on your competitor.
No website is better than a broken one
This surprises people, but it's true. A business with no website and a strong Google Business Profile can still generate calls and enquiries. A business with a broken website is actively turning people away. At least "no website" doesn't send the wrong message — it just sends no message. A slow, ugly, or confusing site tells people you don't care about the details. And if you don't care about your own website, why would they trust you with their money?
The numbers don't lie
53%
of mobile visitors leave a site that takes more than three seconds to load. Most WordPress sites take five to eight seconds.
75%
of people judge a business's credibility based on its website design. First impressions are formed in under a second.
68%
of online experiences begin with a search engine. If your site doesn't appear on Google, you're invisible to most of your potential customers.
The Real Cost of Doing Nothing
The money you're not spending on a new website isn't being saved. It's being lost — slowly, invisibly, every single day.
Slow Page Loads
Every second of load time costs you visitors. I've audited hundreds of small business sites, and the pattern is always the same: a WordPress site bloated with plugins, loading in five to eight seconds, haemorrhaging visitors before they've seen a word of content. The sites I build load in under a second. That's not a small difference — it's the difference between someone staying and someone leaving.
Not Mobile-Friendly
More than half of all web traffic is mobile. Google indexes the mobile version of your site first — not the desktop version. If your site doesn't work properly on a phone, Google deprioritises it and your competitors move up. I still see sites where the text is too small to read, buttons are impossible to tap, and the layout breaks on anything smaller than a laptop screen.
Invisible on Google
A site without SEO foundations is a shop with no sign above the door. No title tags, no meta descriptions, no heading structure, no schema markup — Google doesn't know what you do or where you do it. Your competitors who invested in SEO are getting the enquiries that should be yours. Every month you wait, they build more authority and the gap widens.
First Impressions
People make judgements about your business in under a second. That's not enough time to read your copy or check your credentials — they're reacting to how the site looks and feels. An outdated design, stock photography from 2012, or a cluttered layout tells visitors that you've stopped investing in your business. Your website is often the first thing a prospect sees. Make sure it says what you want it to say.
Platform Debt
WordPress plugin rot is real. Every update is a risk. Every plugin is a potential security hole. Wix and Squarespace charge monthly fees for tools you've outgrown, and lock your content behind their platform. I've migrated businesses off every major platform over the past 26 years, and the story is always the same: they stayed too long because switching felt like a big project. The longer you wait, the more content you have to migrate.
Lost Referrals
Word of mouth is still the strongest driver for most small businesses. But what happens after someone recommends you? The prospect searches your name, lands on your site, and forms an opinion. If your website doesn't match the quality of your actual work, you're losing referrals you'll never know about. Nobody calls to say "I was going to hire you but your website put me off."
When NOT to Invest in a New Website
I'd rather tell you the truth and earn your respect than sell you something you don't need. Here are four situations where a new website isn't the answer.
You're brand new and haven't found your market yet
If you've just started out and you're still working out who your customers are, what you're charging, or even exactly what you offer, don't spend thousands on a website. Start with a £49/month site that gets you online quickly. Test the market, refine your message, and then invest properly once you know what's working. The worst outcome is an expensive website that describes a business you've already pivoted away from.
My advice: Start lean at £49/month. Invest as the evidence builds.
Your existing site is fundamentally sound
If your website loads quickly, works on mobile, and looks professional, you might not need a rebuild at all. Sometimes the problem isn't the site — it's that nobody can find it. An SEO retainer could be much better value than starting from scratch. I'll tell you this honestly in our first conversation, even though a rebuild would earn me more money.
My advice: Get a free audit first. Let the data decide, not a sales pitch.
You just need a visual refresh
If the structure and content are solid but the design looks dated, a website makeover is cheaper and faster than a ground-up rebuild. New colours, modern typography, better imagery, and tighter layout — without throwing away content that's already ranking on Google. A makeover protects your existing SEO while modernising the experience.
My advice: A makeover costs less and preserves what's already working.
You're not sure what you need
If you're reading this page and you're genuinely not sure whether a new website, an SEO retainer, or a makeover is the right move — call me. I mean that. I'd rather spend twenty minutes on the phone giving you honest advice than have you spend money on the wrong thing. If the answer is "do nothing for now," I'll say so.
My advice: Call me on 01952 407599. I'd rather earn your respect than your money.
What a Modern Website Actually Delivers
Not features for the sake of features. These are the things that directly affect whether your website generates business or gathers dust.
Sub-Second Page Loads
I build with Astro — a modern framework that produces static HTML. No server-side processing, no database queries, no plugin overhead. The result is pages that load in under a second, consistently. That's not an aspiration — it's what every site I build achieves. Your visitors don't wait, and Google rewards the speed.
Mobile-First Design
Every site I build starts with the mobile layout, not the desktop one. This isn't just a development preference — it's how Google evaluates your site. Mobile-first indexing means the phone version is what counts. Text is readable, buttons are tappable, and navigation works with a thumb.
SEO Built In from Day One
Every page gets proper title tags, meta descriptions, heading hierarchy, image alt text, and structured data. Your sitemap is generated automatically. Canonical tags prevent duplicate content issues. This isn't an add-on — it's how every site should be built, and it's included in every package I offer.
Rich Search Results
Structured data tells Google exactly what your business does, where you're based, your opening hours, your reviews, and your services. This leads to richer search results — the enhanced listings with star ratings, FAQs, and business details that stand out on the page and get more clicks.
Forms That Generate Enquiries
A contact form that works on every device, sends you a notification immediately, and doesn't end up in spam. It sounds basic, but I've lost count of how many businesses I've audited where the contact form was broken, the email went to an old address, or it simply didn't work on mobile.
Every Change Tracked
Your website has a complete version history. Every change is recorded with a timestamp and a description of what was done. If rankings shift, I can identify the exact change responsible. If something breaks, I can roll it back in minutes. Try doing that with WordPress or Wix.
