What I Need From You
A Short Checklist — Not a Homework Assignment

Getting a website built shouldn't feel like filling in a mortgage application. Here's everything I need to get started — most of it you already have. If anything's missing, I'll sort it. That's what you're paying me for.

The Essentials

Six things that get a project moving. You probably have most of these already — and if you don't, every single one has a fallback I can help with.

Your Business Name and Contact Details

Your business name, phone number, email address, and physical address — exactly as you want them to appear on the website. If you're a new business still deciding on a name, that's fine too. I'll work with whatever stage you're at.

Why it matters: Consistency across your website, Google Business Profile, and directories is crucial for local search rankings.

Your Logo

If you have a logo, send me the highest quality version you've got — ideally a PNG with a transparent background, or the original design files. A JPEG works too.

Photos of Your Work, Team, and Premises

Real photos beat stock photos every time. A slightly imperfect shot of your actual workshop, shopfront, or finished project is more convincing than any polished stock image. Customers want to see you, not a model.

Phone photos are fine. Modern phones take excellent photos. Send what you have — I'll tell you what works and what needs replacing.

A Rough Idea of What Pages You Need

You don't need a full sitemap. Something like "a homepage, an about page, our services, and a contact page" is plenty to get started. I'll advise on the structure based on what works for your type of business and what Google expects to see.

Not sure? That's genuinely fine. After 26 years of building business websites, I know what pages your industry needs. I'll propose a structure and you tell me what's missing.

Access to Your Domain Registrar

If you already own a domain name (like yourbusiness.co.uk), I'll need login details for wherever it's registered — GoDaddy, 123 Reg, Namecheap, or whoever. This lets me point it at your new site when we're ready to launch.

Don't have a domain? I'll register one for you. I'll also check that the name you want is available and suggest alternatives if it's taken.

Your Google Business Profile Login

If you have a Google Business Profile (the listing that appears on Google Maps), I'll need access so I can link it to your new website, update the information, and make sure everything's consistent. This has a direct impact on local search rankings.

Don't have one? I'll set it up as part of the build. It's one of the most important things a local business can have, and it's free.

Nice to Have

None of these are essential, but they speed things up if you have them. If you don't, I'll work around it — that's the job.

Written Content or Copy

If you've already written about your services, that's a useful starting point. But if you haven't, don't worry — I write website copy as part of the service. Most clients prefer a phone call where they tell me about the business, and I turn that into clear, professional content.

Competitor Sites You Like or Dislike

Knowing what you like — and what you definitely don't want — saves time. Even "I like how clean that one looks" or "I hate sites with too much going on" gives me something concrete to work with.

Brand Colours or Existing Guidelines

If your logo uses specific colours, or you have brand guidelines from a designer, send them across. If not, I'll build a colour palette from your logo and industry that looks professional and consistent.

Customer Testimonials and Reviews

Real reviews and testimonials build trust faster than anything else on a website. If you have Google reviews, I'll pull those in automatically. If customers have sent you nice emails or messages, forward them — I'll format them properly.

Social Media Links

Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok — whatever you use. I'll link them from the website so visitors can find you elsewhere too. If you're not on social media, that's perfectly fine. Not every business needs it.

I set up fast, reliable hosting. It's included — you don't need to shop around.

DNS Configuration

The technical bit that makes your domain point to your website. All handled.

SSL Certificate

The padlock in the browser bar. Your site will be secure from day one.

I'll set up tracking so you can see how many people visit and what they do.

Search Engine Optimisation

Every site I build is optimised for Google from the start. Not an afterthought — it's built into the process.

Technical markup that helps Google understand your business. You'll never need to know what it is.
